GUANAJUATO CITY

This is Guanajuato City, Mexico in 1910. It was small town with a population of only about 1200 people. It was very different then and much more quiet than it is today. Today, it's a city with over 180 000 people, and thousands of restaurants, theaters, and stores.

 In the past, there used to be lots of carriages and streetcars on the roads. There weren't many cars back then, and no buses. There were only a few houses, and no modern buildings like libraries and hotels. There weren't even any highways! There weren't any big malls or grocery stores, just some small markets and restaurants, and now there are many neighborhoods full of houses.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

He was an American activist; he was also a leader in the African-American civil rights movement. He was an important figure in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world, using nonviolent methods.  King is a heroic leader in the history of modern American liberalism.

King became a civil rights activist early in his career.

In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other nonviolent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and stopping the Vietnam War.

King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee
